OUR DIARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES IN July 2008
3rd: We went to Reading to watch our grandson Philip in his school Drama Group presentation. 5th: I went to Birmingham all day to attend a meeting of the Arthur Ransome Society Board. 6th: To Reading all day to attend the 'Fun Day' services at Greyfriars Church. At the afternoon service, our Grandson Matthew, was confirmed by the Bishop of Reading. 9th: I attended a Finance Committee Meeting at Broad Town School and then went on to a disastrous Church Meeting at Freshbrook Evangelical Church. I was denied access to the meeting because it was wrongly assumed that I had resigned as a church member. There was a sequel to follow! 11th: After attending a committee of examination invigilators at Nova Hreod School, Marilyn decided to apply to join the team of invigilators. In the evening, Julian came in to help us with some computer problems. 13th: After the evening service at Freshbrook Evangelical Church I showed the video of George Beverly Shea's 99th birthday celebrations. It was much enjoyed. 15th: To Reading once again to see our Grandson Peter play the part of Lewis Carroll in his school play 'Alice in Wonderland'. He did very well. 16th: I attended a Governors' Meeting at Broad Town School, where we heard of the awful mix-up in the marking of the SATS exam papers. Broad Town suffered badly from the effects of the problem. 17th: At the invitation of Margaret Green, Chairman of our School Governors, Marilyn and I went to a barbecue at her house, and met all the school staff. 18th: I attended a marvellous afternoon at Greendown School where the pupils entertained us to a hour-and-a-half musical concert. The Mayor and Member of Parliament were there. 22nd: In the afternoon, Marilyn and I went to see the film Mama Mia. It was a wonderful 'summer' film with good music and lots of fun. 23rd: We went on a canal boat for the day, from Newbury. Alan & Sheila Bailey; Brian and Elizabeth King-Fisher and Andy and Janette Conway were in the party (plus Bobbie, the dog) We went through six locks and had a good time in glorious weather. The sequel to the Church Meeting on the 9th July happened in the evening. The Pastor, and elders all walked out and Dave Davison, the Youth Worker was re-instated. It was a sad day and never needed to have happened. This may not be the end of the story. 24th: Marilyn went to London to have lunch with Veronica Alvarez (her former Community Bible Study Associate). I went to Broad Town School to attend their Leavers' Service. Very good. 26th: We attended the wedding of Alta and Neil at Freshbrook Church - virtually the last service at which David Earnshaw will be speaking. 27th: Our first service without David Earnshaw. We had the biggest prayer meeting we have ever had, and a good congregation at church. Afterwards we went to Gerrards Cross for a RNR officers' lunch at the lovely home of Douglas Haller. Then we stopped for a cup of tea at Diana's before getting back in time for the evening service. 28th: I drove to Bristol to spend the day aboard the steamer BALMORAL. We went through five bridges, and traversed three rivers. It rained very heavily on arrival at Clevedon, but stopped long enough to walk the length of the pier to join the buses back to Bristol. 29th: To Bristol once again to attend the Speed Choice Course run by Somerset Police force.
